Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus HD Gameplay Trailer
Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus doesn't bring the console gameplay to iOS and Android devices, but rather it took on the 'runner' type of game. Ratchet is the only playable character and Clank is strapped to his Ratchet's back like a backpack. Like any other 'runner' game, 'bolts' are the main currency, which can also be used for purchases. Ratchet can't be controlled with the traditional platformer controls because he is constantly moving forward. However, he can move to the left, right and jump onto rails with a swipe in that direction. After a riding the rails, he moves onto a platform based ground where he can shoot enemies, which uses up 'bolts', but still Ratchet can only move left or right.
The graphics looked really good for mobile devices and has brought the Ratchet & Clank atmosphere with visuals that are associated with the Ratchet & Clank universe. The weapons detail looked great and showed how much detail the developers put into designing the weapons.
The sound effects and BGM are great that any Ratchet & Clank fan may recognize with Ratchet's voice as he jumps around to other rails and the ground. There isn't much dialogue in the game from any character and the sound effects/BGM has been the only thing heard during gameplay.
In order for Ratchet to defeat his enemies, he needs an arsenal of weapons, armor, and gadgets to accomplish this. This is where the shop comes in handy because various weapons, armors, and gadgets can be purchased and upgraded. PS3 owners of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus can also obtain Raritanium from Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus and able to sync to the PS3 game. They can do this by signing in with their Playstation Network ID. This is a great way for players to get more Raritanium on the go.
During the opening of the game, there is a brief news feed to bring the players what the game will be about. There is no dialogue during the news feed, only subtitles and the news feed doesn't use any cutscenes. With todays technology, cutscenes could have been used in instead of stills. Like many mobile games, real currency can be used to purchase in game currency, in this case, 'bolts'. Using real currency to buy in game currency to buy and upgrade early seems like a waste of money, which the game could be completed in a few hours a few days and not played again. That money can be used to buy something more useful in life instead of something that can't be used ouside the game.
Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus may have disappointed fans of the series because they may have expected a port of the console type game for their mobile devices. With so many 'runner' games on the market now, Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus can offer the same gameplay. This game is a way to pass time and/or to play another Ratchet & Clank game. If the game were to made into a platfomer instead of a 'runner' game, it may affect Sony's PS Vita and PSP sales because many people already have mobile devices instead of PS Vita or PSP. This game was a good way for Sony to put one of their iconic characters onto a non-Sony device, which may have brought more casual gamers to get introduced to the Ratchet & Clank series.
Ratchet & Clank: Before the Nexus is available now for iOS devices and Android devices for free.
