Can You Endure And Survive The Last Of Us?
Naughty Dog's survival horror The Last of Us is a visually stunning, character driven masterpiece. Another emotionally scarring "zombie" game. Set in the year 2033 where a fungal-based plague left the world lost, and has almost completely extinguished the human race. The unfortunate inhabitants who were not lucky enough to survive this plague, have now had their humanity stripped away and live as either Runners, Stalkers, Bloaters or Clickers. That are all equally terrifying and disturbing, in an intriguing way.
The game follows Joel and Ellie, survivors of this fungal plague. Joel, a haunted man who apathetically lives on, while trying not to let his past life as a father get to him. Ellie is a spirited 14 year old girl, who was raised in this post-apocalyptic world. Not knowing anything else has made it easier for her to adapt, in more ways then anyone knows. (She also cusses every two seconds.)
The Last Of Us pulls you in within the first five minutes, by letting the player essentially live Joel's back story. Giving us an understanding as to why he is so guarded. Ellie and Joel are initially hesitant to get to know one another, but as the game progresses they slowly start to establish a strong bond. The Last of Us plays more survival than horror. The controls are easy enough to get used to. Although I don't know how many times I accidentally threw a nail bomb, but by the middle of the game it wasn't a problem. The player is immersed in a beautiful abandoned world overtaken by vegetation and infection.
The games locations vary, from the rundown streets of Boston to a quarantined Salt Lake City. Which makes for an interesting environment transition as you advance. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and highly recommend it, for anybody who plays games not only for fun but for a great story also. It pulled me in and didn't let me go till the very end. So I leave saying; make The Last Of Us your next adventure.
