When Star Wars Met Nintendo
What would you say if someone could pretty much define your entire childhood in one video? If you were a child of the 80's and 90's then there's a good chance that somebody just did. Star Wars and Nintendo were two of the most beloved creations during that area, and now they have (unofficially) come together in a most beautiful way. Super Smash Wars: A Link To The Hope is the work of a ridiculously talented fellow by the name of James Farr. Retelling the story of the original Star Wars flick in just shy of nine minutes, it replaces the familiar characters with those from Nintendo's games. Link (naturally) is cast as Luke, Mario is Han Solo and Princess Peach fills in for Leia. The casting is pretty damn perfect, right down to Donkey Kong being Chewbacca. The animation looks just like you'd imagine these two cultural giants coming together would be like....
The animator has packed in more references than you shake a light sabre at, and if you're a true Nintendo geek you'll have a real blast spotting them. As well as in the visuals there's plenty of references in the soundtrack- so even though there's little spoken dialogue make sure you have the sound up. The music too, is pitch perfect. Test your credentials- how many references can you spot?
If you like it (and I'm pretty sure that you will) then be sure to check out James's Youtube channel for more of his work. He's already brought out such inspired mash-ups at Teenage Mutant Ninja Koopas and Mario Busters. Now, we've just got to cross our fingers he brings us the Ninty take on the Empire Strikes Back, and soon!
