SOMA: Amnesia Creators Reveal New Horror Game
Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent has revealed their current project. The game has been in development for three years already, unbeknownst to Amnesia fans. According to creative director Thomas Grip, the game is by far the most ambitious and thrilling project that the indie studio has ever undertaken.
The game, SOMA, will be a sci-fi horror designed to explore consciousness on a profound level. Can machines be conscious? Does free will exist? Like Amnesia, the game will be a first person exploration/survival style. Players will need to defeat a series of disturbing monsters, each representing a nuance of the theme.
"Our goal is for SOMA to not just be another carnival ride of cheap scares. It is meant to chill you to your core, and confront you with questions about your very existence."
The game, rather than developed around gameplay like previous endeavors, will be theme-centric. By starting with the theme, developers can provide the most immersive and disturbing environments possible.
"In all of our previous games, the setting and themes have been by-products. While a lot of good can come from this approach, it makes it very hard to approach tougher subjects. SOMA is meant to be a proper sci-fi game, and to get that right we couldn’t let the themes be an afterthought. My favorite works of sci-fi are the ones that use fantastic worlds to probe important issues in a way that down-to-earth settings just cannot."
So far, the release date is scheduled for sometime in 2015. Like their previous games, SOMA will be released on PC. The game will be Frictional's first console game, available for PS4.
