Grand Theft Auto 5's Budget Larger Than Any Other Game
With its 265 million dollar budget, GTA 5 will be the most expensive video game ever produced. Grand Theft Auto 5's budget will also be larger than that of most movies- in fact, the only film with a larger budget is 2007's Pirates of the Caribbean 3.
Grand Theft Auto 5's budget more than doubled that of the last instalment, GTA 4 in 2008. The game is projected to sell 25 million copies, bringing in 1.57 billion dollars in its first year alone.
The series has already sold over 135 million copies worldwide, making it Scotland's largest culture export. Stock prices have nearly doubled for Rockstar Games' parent company, Take-Two Interactive, after they experienced a loss in investors in past years.
With 5 years in the making, some experts think that the highly anticipated GTA 5 will be a record breaker and a revolutionary point in gaming. Developers have spent years and over a quarter billion dollars to create the most realistic and immersive experience possible. It's all in the details- which has prompted organizers to use architectural experts, police officers, and even real gang members to create a truly authentic atmosphere.
The game will be set in a semi-satirical recreation of Southern California, namely Los Angeles. Players will be able to visit strip clubs, swim with sharks, smoke marijuana, or have their character's genitals pierced. Other new features include stock trading, sky diving, and bank robbing.
Art director Aaron Garbut says, "I think, most of all, what we’ve done is create a world that you can lose yourself in. A place that’s interesting and fun to live in. I’ve effectively lived more in the game world than I have in Edinburgh over the past several years as we’ve filled it out."
