Diablo 3 Expansion: Reaper of Souls
Blizzard recently announced a Diablo 3 expansion for PC will be hitting stores in 2014. This announcement was met with mixed emotions by the game’s community for an extensive list of reasons. Mainly, the game’s May 2012 release was possibly one of the most poorly orchestrated in the history of video games (keep in mind this was before Sim City). This, along with the exclusion of all PVP content, left most Diablo fans with a bitter taste in their mouth. For many, the announcement of the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion pack just meant that Blizzard was asking for more money for content that the game already should have had. And worst of all, it has been confirmed that there is still no PVP planned for the expansion! Yet, I felt that the Diablo 3 expansion announcement was a breath of fresh air.
Blizzard was already in the limelight throughout August in anticipation of Diablo 3’s release on XBOX 360 and PS3. There was a noticeable lack in content development for the PC version over the past months, and though Blizzard denies a connection, it’s probable that it was related to the upcoming release for console. Alas, it was confirmed by CM Grimiku on the Diablo 3 forums that many new features will become available as a free content patch prior to the release of the expansion. Among these are ‘Loot 2.0’, ‘Paragon 2.0’, and ‘the Mystic’.
Let’s start with Loot 2.0 and how its going to change the game. Amongst the many promised features, like increased drop rates for Legendary items, is the Smart Drop feature. Smart Drop promises to occasionally roll the stats on an item specifically for the class you are currently slaying demons with. Its also been stated that a lot of the legendary items you’ll find in the game will be bound on account. Hopefully this is Blizzard’s first attempt at weening the game’s community off of the auction house!
Paragon 2.0 is going to shift the current character based paragon system to an account-wide system. Every time you increase your paragon level you’ll be able to allot paragon stat points to a broad range of stats; everything from vitality to attack speed. This will allow for ample new playing style possibilities. Perhaps the most exciting update coming with the free content patch is the Mystic. The Mystic will allow you to enchant your items and transmorgify appearances. Diversification seems to be Blizzard’s new direction with the Diablo 3 expansion.
When the Diablo 3 expansion pack hits the shelves in 2014 we’ll see a new class, The Crusader, along with Act V and an increase in the level cap to 70. That means new gear! Weapons will be more powerful: armor will be stronger and probably look a hell of a lot cooler. Hopefully, the Diablo 3 expansion will show the community that Blizzard still cares and has learned from their mistakes. Only time will tell. We’re likely to see a Beta release later in 2013 so be sure to check back for a Preview of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. Sorry to break the news PS3 and XBOX 360 fans...the expansion will not come out at the same time as the PC version.
