Diablo 3 Expansion: Reaper of Souls

Diablo 3 Expansion: Reaper of Souls
Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls

Blizzard recently announced a Diablo 3 expansion for PC will be hitting stores in 2014. This announcement was met with mixed emotions by the game’s community for an extensive list of reasons. Mainly, the game’s May 2012 release was possibly one of the most poorly orchestrated in the history of video games (keep in mind this was before Sim City). This, along with the exclusion of all PVP content, left most Diablo fans with a bitter taste in their mouth. For many, the announcement of the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion pack just meant that Blizzard was asking for more money for content that the game already should have had. And worst of all, it has been confirmed that there is still no PVP planned for the expansion!  Yet, I felt that the Diablo 3 expansion announcement was a breath of fresh air.

Blizzard was already in the limelight throughout August in anticipation of Diablo 3’s release on XBOX 360 and PS3. There was a noticeable lack in content development for the PC version over the past months, and though Blizzard denies a connection, it’s probable that it was related to the upcoming release for console. Alas, it was confirmed by CM Grimiku on the Diablo 3 forums that many new features will become available as a free content patch prior to the release of the expansion. Among these are ‘Loot 2.0’, ‘Paragon 2.0’, and ‘the Mystic’.

Let’s start with Loot 2.0 and how its going to change the game. Amongst the many promised features, like increased drop rates for Legendary items, is the Smart Drop feature. Smart Drop promises to occasionally roll the stats on an item specifically for the class you are currently slaying demons with. Its also been stated that a lot of the legendary items you’ll find in the game will be bound on account. Hopefully this is Blizzard’s first attempt at weening the game’s community off of the auction house!

Paragon 2.0 is going to shift the current character based paragon system to an account-wide system. Every time you increase your paragon level you’ll be able to allot paragon stat points to a broad range of stats; everything from vitality to attack speed. This will allow for ample new playing style possibilities.  Perhaps the most exciting update coming with the free content patch is the Mystic. The Mystic will allow you to enchant your items and transmorgify appearances. Diversification seems to be Blizzard’s new direction with the Diablo 3 expansion.

Mystic

When the Diablo 3 expansion pack hits the shelves in 2014 we’ll see a new class, The Crusader, along with Act V and an increase in the level cap to 70. That means new gear! Weapons will be more powerful: armor will be stronger and probably look a hell of a lot cooler. Hopefully, the Diablo 3 expansion will show the community that Blizzard still cares and has learned from their mistakes. Only time will tell. We’re likely to see a Beta release later in 2013 so be sure to check back for a Preview of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. Sorry to break the news PS3 and XBOX 360 fans...the expansion will not come out at the same time as the PC version.

Personally, I’m looking forward to the changes. I’ve been playing since shortly after release. I really look forward to the changes to the loot and paragon systems. I am disappointed about there only being just one class being added.

I am very excited for the new feartures, mainly the paragon levels being account wide. It’s nice so i don’t have to spend so much time on all characters trying to balance the levels out. My second favorite is the new class, new class to play and have fun with (:

I think they should work in the itemization to make it worth.
I like the new paragon 2.0 thing but let’s wait how they make it work.
I wanted another class, not a copy of an older class but again, I will wait and see.

Loot 2.0 is sorely, sorely needed and hopefully will hit sooner rather than later.
New class will of course be nice bringing in a much needed D2 flavour. But the new areas and bosses are key for me, along with the 15-20min ‘loot runs’. Can’t wait!

I think we’re on the same page here. Everything is a welcomed change…but the loot runs and new bosses will take some of the pain out of grinding. You can only farm the same routes so many times before you’re brain starts oozing from your ears.

That’s where I’ve been coming from when arguing with friends on the matter. D2 was nothing without LoD. Hopefully RoS will be as potent a stimulant to D3 as LoD was to D2.

This is what struck me as odd as well…a big promise of a free content patch with a $40 small expansion.

I’m not going to lie though, I’d buy the expansion just for the Crusader. I’ve wanted a shield reliant class since the game was released.

Definitely excited about the game, despite D3′s short comings the game excelled at keeping me entertained for over 100 hours and that’s what matters.

I still play to this day and also pre-ordered two copies of D3 on PS3. The expansion announcement has just made me want to play the game more than ever. Looking forward to the big changes down the road.

I’ll be playing a long time.

It would be really nice if these changes actually helped shift the game away from the AH. They certainly seem to be designed towards that goal. A part of me always fears that Blizzard’s greed will get the best of them yet again.

Honestly I can’t wait for RoS. I’ve been a die hard Diablo fan for years, I used to play D2:LoD with my dad when I was a kid. D3 is great but it had a really rocky start, and I think RoS will solve almost all of the issues that drove the community away from the game. Hopefully we can get some great positive media towards RoS and regain that great playerbase D2 had and D3 could have!

This really should be the case. If I pay for RoS and blizz fails to save the current state of D3, it is going to be a truly sad day. Let’s just hope everything functions as well as they’d like us to believe.

I’ve been playing Diablo practically my entire life. I’m super-hyped for this expansion and I hope it solves the majority of issues with D3 that occurred at launch. I hope we can build a positive movement and get a community going like the good ol’ days of D2 & LoD.
