Gamescom: Xbox One Euro Edition Includes FIFA 14, Launch Lineup confirmed

The US has E3, and Japan has Tokyo Game Show, but inbetween the two comes Gamescom, one of the leading gaming events in Europe. Taking place between the 21st and 25th of August in Cologne, Germany most of the major industry players will be in attendance. Sony are expected to reveal launch details in their press conference that will be streamed live, but first out of the gate was Microsoft who elected to have a pre-event conference, that, unusually, wasn't streamed live. Perhaps after their experience at this year's E3, they decided on a press only event.  Whatever the reason behind the decision, a fair few interesting detail regarding the launch of the Xbox One were revealed, including the console's launch line-up.

Microsoft have received a large amount of negative press over the price of the new machine, with the £430 UK price being even more that the already wallet-unfriendly US price (it works out at $673 compared to $599). Although there has been speculation that they might offer a Kinect-free edition at a more appealing price point, they've instead decided to throw in a free game with all pre-ordered European consoles. The game in question is a digital version of EA sport's  football sim FIFA 14, which is rather a shrewd move seeing as FIFA is one of Europe's biggest franchises and FIFA 13 was the biggest selling game of the last year in the UK. This will certainly be a bonus to any FIFA-loving gamers who've already pre-ordered their console. Whether it is enough to make people choose it over the PS4 is a different matter- it's still £90 more expensive. If you prefer shooting computer-generated people in the face to chasing a virtual ball around a field, then a Call of Duty Ghosts Bundle has also been confirmed.

An impressive 23 games have been confirmed for launch day, although the exact date that that will be remains elusive. We only know that it will almost certainly be November. Here's the list in full:

• Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag (Ubisoft, Ubisoft)
• Battlefield 4 (DICE, Electronic Arts)
• Call of Duty: Ghosts (Infinity Ward, Activision)
• Crimson Dragon (Grounding/Land Ho!, Microsoft Studios)

[...] At this year's Gamecom Microsoft pulled a surprise announcement: that European Xbox One would include a free (digital) copy of the eagerly anticipated FIFA 14. Those who had already pre-ordered found themselves with a bit of a bonus- that their pre-order would be better value than it first appeared. Today however Microsoft have announced a caveat- that the offer is limited to the Day One Edition only. [...]
